Combination products contain two or more active ingredients (from different chemical groups) that both target the same parasite. They offer more than one way to kill the parasite.
They have two main advantages over single-active products:
- Greater effectiveness against worms (drench resistant or susceptible), as the combined effect of two or more drenches maximises efficacy.
- A ‘resistance delay’ effect, as even though resistance may have developed, few worms are likely to be simultaneously resistant to both/all actives in the product, and the number that survive drenching is reduced in comparison to treatment with single-actives.
Combination products presently available include oral and pour-on formulations.
