Tapeworms

Tapeworms of cattle in Australia can be divided into 2 broad groups:

Adult tapeworms in cattle:

• Intestinal tapeworm: Moniezia benedeni in the small intestine of cattle.

Larval cysts of tapeworms in cattle:

Three larval tapeworms develop in cattle, their adult stages are found in dogs and in one case, man.

• Hydatid cysts: Echinococcus granulosus cysts in the liver and lungs.
• Beef measles: Taenia saginata (Cysticercus bovis) cysts in the muscles.
• Bladder worm: Taenia hydatigena (Cysticercus tenuicollis cysts) in the peritoneum (membrane lining the abdominal cavity).
